May 2008 Publication

A little girl asked her daddy to tell her a story.  He related a tale involving slaves.  "What's a slave, daddy?"  she asked.  He explained as best he could.  When he was through, she looked at her daddy and asked,  "Is what what mommy is?"

A little girl, shown pictures of her mother and father on their wedding day asked her father,  "Daddy, is that the day you got mother to come to work for you?"

And then there was Jimmy's mother, a believer in the "be-a-little-gentleman-and-don't fight"  school of upbringing who was trying to instill this noble outlook into her quick-to-fight young son.
"Jimmy, when that naughty boy threw stones at you, why didn't you come and tell me instead of throwing them back?"

"What good would that do?"  snorted Jimmy.  "You can't hit the broad side of a barn."

Motherhood!  I cannot think of a role that is as challenging, demanding and often unappreciated, yet so valuable and I'm sure, mostly fulfilling.  How can mothers always be firm, fair, fun, consistent and impartial?  The following illustration makes my point.

A woman was being congratulated by a friend after her son and daughter were married within a month of each other.

"What kind of boy did your daughter marry?" asked the neighbor.

"Oh, he's wonderful,"  gushed the mother.  "He makes her sleep late, wants her to go to the beauty parlor everyday, won't let her cook, and insists upon taking her out to dinner every night."

"That's nice," said the neighbor.  "And your son?  What kind of a girl did he marry?"

The mother sighed, "Oh I'm not so happy there.  She's lazy.  Sleeps late every morning, spends all her time at the beauty parlor, won't cook, and makes them take all their meals out."

Mothers, I commend you for taking your responsibilities seriously, and I just happen to know a Book that gives good instructions.  If followed you will leave an amazing legacy;  not only a good one, but a Godly one.
