January 2006 Publication

Victor Borge told a friend that he could tell time by his piano. His friend was incredulous, so Borge volunteered to demonstrate. He pounded out a crashing march. Immediately there came a banging on the wall and a shrill voice screamed, "Stop that noise. Don't you know it's 1:30 in the morning?"

I suppose most of us have said or heard someone else say, as we entered this New Year, "Where did that time go?"

If you had a bank that credited your account each morning with $86,400, that carried over no balance from day to day, and allowed you to keep no cash in your account, and every evening canceled whatever part of the amount you had failed to use during the day, what would you do? Draw out every cent, of course!

Well, you do have such a bank, and its name is "time". Every morning it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it rules off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose.

If you fail to use the day's deposits the loss is yours.

The following are a few proven time wasters.
1. Worry a lot. Start worrying early in the morning and intensify your anxiety as the day passes. (Consider the words of the old wall plaque), "Today is the tomorrow we worried about yesterday, and all is well."
2. Fix your attention on getting rich.
3. Compare yourself with others.
4. Lengthen your list of enemies by nursing grudges, criticizing others and playing the blame game.

May I suggest that a great way to invest your time wisely is to find creative ways to serve others? We are trying to learn how to do that here at NSCF. Why don't you come learn with us?

Have a productive and prosperous New Year.
